An explanation of the concept of self-management and the basis for OTC therapies with detail discussions of the major ailments that can be managed with OTC medications. The course has the following objectives: 1) To help the students grasp the concept of "OTC" drugs and FDA guidelines regarding these drugs. 2) To increase students’ knowledge of non-prescription products available in the Jordanian market. 3) To provide students with the ability to differentiate between circumstances warranting the use of non-prescription products and those for which alternative modes of care are indicated. 4) To provide students with the ability to recommend specific non-prescription products and/or other modes of care to alleviate specific conditions. 5) To provide students with the ability to differentiate between rational and irrational use of non-prescription products 6) To stimulate the ability of the students to practice clinical judgment regarding the selection of the most appropriate OTC drug after initial evaluation of patient's condition. 7) To develop and polish the students’ pharmacist-patient communication skills (i.e. counseling, interviewing, individualizing the treatment…etc).

This is a 2-hour course that aims at introducing the students to non-drug therapies available on the market with emphasis on the role of the community pharmacist. The course also covers treatments for several ailments that are managed without hospital referral or admission. The latter includes pediculosis, minor wound management, minor burns management, headaches, fungal skin infections and more.

Evidence based treatments of major psychiatric and CNS conditions like major depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and specific phobias. The course also covers the treatments of common GI ailments such as viral hepatitis and inflammatory bowel diseases. The last section in the course covers basic concepts in cancer terminology, pathophysiology and palliative treatments. Solid organ transplantation is covered at the end of the semester as well

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge of clinical manifestations, complications, goals of pharmacotherapy and patient education of selected cardiovascular and endocrinologic disorders. In addition, it aims to provide the students with the knowledge of clinical uses, pharmacokinetics, clinically significant side effects & drug interactions and contraindications to medications used in the treatment of cardiovascular and endocrinologic disorders.
